Bougainvilleas

Gumpaste Bougainvilleas
A fun gumpaste flower to make

I finally finished the bougainvilleas for the cake I am making and took this picture of them in a vase. It took me a couple of tries to get the coloring just how I wanted it, testing it out on the extra petals I make just for sampling colors.

I am quite happy with the end result. I spent one entire morning making all the petals but I just wasn't really happy with them and thought I had wasted all my time. So, the next day I made all new petals which I used. I needed to make the leaves and I came to find out my time wasn't wasted after all with those petals I didn't like since I was able to use them as the leaves... I was pretty excited about that.

  1. Thanks Nurainie, and yes there is a cutter and veiner...the trick i found out is the shaping of the petals... I can let you know the maker if you like. this is a very fun flower to make once I figured out the shaping..

  3. Hi Shaile,

I have to make some of these for a wedding coming up, but I can't get the color right. Do you remember which colors you used? Did you dye the gum paste first or did you just paint them afterwards? I've tried fuchsia in Americolor and it is too purple. Any advice would be so appreciated!

    1. Hi Nicole, I colored the paste pink and then I dusted them with Dark Magenta and pink. You can mix them or dust with the Magenta first then add the pink. The pink made it look brighter. Hope this helps. It was a long time ago. Fuchsia is purple I believe.

    2. Thank you so much! That helps a lot. I have one more question... did you use a leaf mold to get the veins or did you use a veining tool like the Jem 12? Did you do the same thing for leaves and flowers or did you approach them differently? Thank you again. You have no idea what a help you have been!

    3. Hi Nicole, I use a bougainvillea cutter veiner set. It is from Squires Kitchen in England. They make other sets I believe. Or you can buy the cutters and veiners separate.
